An area rug can really pull together an entire room. The only problem is, given the multitude of choices when it comes to rugs, from different sizes, to different colours, to different textures, it can be an incredibly overwhelming decision on which one best compliments your space. It’s really important to focus on 3 main points when out searching for that perfect rug:
Pick the Perfect Area Rug
“What do you love?”
“Where will it be placed in the room?”
“How to take care of it?”
An area rug should really bring together the various elements of a room – from the furniture, to the tone of the flooring, it can truly finish a space. Colour is always key when choosing a rug. If you already have a lot of colour or patten in the room, you may want to go with a single, neutral colour or pattern so not to overwhelm the space. That being said, if the room could use an extra pop of colour or pattern, don’t be afraid to go bold or mix prints!
In terms of texture, take into consideration the fabric of your furniture. The texture of a rugs always looks best when it contrasts to the fabric of the furniture. For example, a sleek leather couch always look great in contract to a long, high pile rug.
It is important though, that you keep in mind practicalities and how much work is involved in the care of the rug. If you intend on having a dining room table on top of the rug, for instance, you want to ensure the rug is low pile so that the chairs can be pulled out with ease. If the rug is going to be in a high traffic area (think kitchen!), you may want to mindful of dirt, stains, pets, and possible trip hazards. Some rugs require more maintenance than others in terms of cleaning and shedding, so bear these aspects in mind also. While it may be a fun, beautiful rug, it also may not be the most practical.
There is no written rule for how small or large a rug should be. General rule of thumb however, appears to be that the rugs should fit the size of your seating area (not necessarily the entire room). While it is considered ideal to have the rugs fit the size of your seating area, it really comes down to personal preference and furniture configuration.
Rugs can be incredibly expensive. If you want a high quality rug but don’t want to break the bank, check out the suggestions listed below.
Rugs USA: One of my favourites, Rugs USA offers a variety of styles and price points and often have promotions offering up to 80% off.
Overstock: Similar to Rugs USA, Overstock has a great range of affordable rugs and feature valid coupon codes directly on their site.
Homegoods (USA) or Homesense (Canada): While they don’t have an e-commerce site, their store is definitely worth a visit. The store purchases merchandise (not just rugs!) from a variety of sources and sells it at a fraction of the price.
Joss and Main: Joss and Main is a flash sale site that offers an amazing selection of home decor items for equally amazing prices. While rugs aren’t offered everyday, they can often be found as part of style themed sales or separate rug-only shops. If you find one you like, make sure to snap it up quick! The sales only last a few days and often times, the item will sell out before the sale ends.
